Clean air is a foundation for public health, climate resilience, and sustainable development. Across Africa, air pollution silently affects millions of people, yet the data needed to track and address it has often been out of reach for the institutions working hardest to protect communities. Digital Earth Africa recently engaged the Africa Clean Air Network (AfriCAN) to introduce free, open, and user-friendly Earth observation tools to clean air practitioners across the continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bridging the data gap<\/sup><\/sub><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

AfriCAN brings together cross-border, cross-sector partnerships dedicated to scalable, evidence-driven, and open-access clean air solutions for African cities. Through two recent sessions held in English and French, DE Africa introduced network members to its platforms, with a focus on Sentinel-5P satellite data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sentinel-5P delivers near-real-time, global measurements of atmospheric composition. Its datasets help researchers track pollutants and trace gases across space and time, supporting work on air pollution, climate change, ozone layer depletion, and human health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Satellite data meets policy action<\/sup><\/sub><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A total of 244 participants from across the globe joined the sessions, signalling strong demand for skills in air quality monitoring. For participants, the value was clear. By combining satellite-based Earth observation with cross-sector policy networks gives local authorities, researchers, and urban planners a practical way to monitor air quality in their own cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Using DE Africa\u2019s cloud-based Open Data Cube infrastructure and notebooks, participants accessed years of historical environmental data, with no advanced programming skills required. This is data democratisation in action, thus putting powerful tools directly into the hands of the people making decisions on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DE Africa and AfriCAN both see potential for further collaboration, with future capacity-building sessions to help local authorities, researchers, and urban planners make evidence-based decisions, track atmospheric pollution, and align local strategies with international development goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
